Community comes together to remember lost firefighter

FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Findlay residents say they will always remember firefighter Tim Hamilton as the hero who pulled 3-year-old Jadyn Drakeford from a fire on South Blanchard St. just after Christmas in 2005, saving the boy's life.

Hamilton died of bladder cancer in February at the age of 50, leaving behind his wife and 2 sons.  Findlay Firefighters and other community members gathered Tuesday night at the Texas Roadhouse in Findlay for a rib eating contest and fundraiser aimed at sending Hamilton's sons, 15-year-old Colton and 13-year-old Austin, to college.

"My dad loved being a firefighter and I think he would be at a loss for words for this support of his brothers at the fire department. Thank you," said Colton.

Teams competed to finish a cob of corn, mashed potatoes, and full slab of ribs before their opponents.  Members of the University of Findlay football team were the winners, but donated their prize to the family.  The restaurant also chipped in 10 percent of the proceeds from Tuesday night's sales.

"This has really been a tough time for us to get through. Just having the support of people we don't even know as well as family, friends, and co-workers. It's just absolutely overwhelming," said Susan Hamilton, Tim's wife.
