Man's hearing to determine competency for trial

Posted: Updated:

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - A competency evaluation is scheduled Wednesday for a man accused of murder.

Shawn Brazeal, 20, is accused of helping his girlfriend, Jennelle McGuire, 19, kill her husband Devin McGuire, 35, last fall in Oregon.

Police say Brazeal held down McGuire while his wife stabbed him more than 12 times.

McGuire's body was found beside Stadium Road, just across from the entrance to the neighborhood. Police believe he may have been killed at the trailer, and then his body was dumped across the street.

Wednesday's hearing will help determine if Brazeal is competent to stand trial. His attorney is claiming that Brazeal did not understand his right to remain silent because he only has an IQ of 53. Prosecutors said if Brazeal is competent to stand trial, then he should have been competent to understand his Miranda Rights.

Court records show that Brazeal admitted he and his girlfriend killed McGuire.
