Last week, I told you about U.S. Olympian Erik Kynard from right here in northwest Ohio. After that aired, I received this letter from his mother:
I was compelled to send you this e-mail because of one key statement that you made during your editorial that "No matter what happens Erik Kynard is a world class athlete and we should all be immensely proud of him." I have always been and always will be my son's biggest cheerleader; I have championed his pursuits since he was a small child. Over the past few days many people; friends, family, and strangers alike have congratulated me for Erik's success, and I welcome their compliments. However I shared with a co-worker that I would have offered the same amount of support and encouragement to Erik if he never won a medal for the simple fact that our children need our encouragement, so I again I thank you for your words of encouragement and reminder to the people of Northwest Ohio that our moment in the media spotlight is not always negative. Thank you again for encouraging Erik to "fly".
