TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Police say a home healthcare aide was walking into her patient's home in a north Toledo neighborhood when she saw a teenager on his way out carrying a flat screen TV.
The aide went inside and found her patient dead. Now, police are investigating if the boy had anything to do with it.
The death of Jill Adix, 67, is the talk of her north Toledo neighborhood along Mettler Street.
Adix's health issues required a caregiver to visit her twice a day.
"It's messed up. That lady never bothered anybody and she needs help to get in and out of her house," said neighbor Lamon Burton
"She's got a home health aide help her go in and out of the house and she never comes out, never bothers anybody," said Burton.
When the caregiver made a second visit to the Adix's home around 5:30 Tuesday evening, she said a teenager was walking out with Adix's flat screen television. Police say the boy even asked the caregiver to help him move it.
She then entered the home and found Adix dead.
"We seen her come out the house. She's screaming like oh she's dead, she's dead she's dead. She was out here, she was very upset," Burton explained.
The thief, who was between the ages of 13 and 15, got away with the stolen television.
Neighbors say he was wearing a shirt with a character from Sesame Street on it.
Burton says teenagers have been knocking on doors along the street, casing the homes of the elderly.
"There's a lot of older people here so it's a nice quiet block and we have a lot of young guys coming over here trying to mess with the older folks, it's very upsetting to us," Burton said.
There were no visible signs of trauma on Adix's body, but due to the unusual circumstances, police are treating this as a homicide.
Investigators returned to the neighborhood today looking for more clues, and they are currently waiting on an autopsy expected for Thursday to reveal how Adix died.
"That's danger. Anytime you can't stay in your house be in your own house," said neighbor Ida Barbour.
Neighbors are concerned something just as heartless could happen to them.
