About three weeks into their agreement, residents of Toledo's Burroughs neighborhood say they are happy with the decision to hire Signal 88, a private security company, to patrol their streets.
The company's security guards drive through the south Toledo neighborhood 4 times a day for about fifteen minutes per visit. They carry pepper spray and handguns, but call Toledo Police in the event they find criminal activity.
That has not been an issue yet though, as officials say Signal 88 has only reported cases of juveniles breaking curfew and loitering on private property.
"[We are] just looking for criminal type activity, making sure that things are peaceful. We've had a couple of things - I think there was a fire started in a dumpster. We made sure that was taken care of. But really nothing really major other than just the curfew and some loitering," said Mario Bernardo, owner of Signal 88 Security.
Burroughs residents say they had hoped to pay the company to patrol the city six times per day, but need 113 more homeowners to pay the voluntary $65 per year fee in order to afford that.
