EDITORIAL: Pool demolitions sad, but necessary

Posted: Updated:

TOLEDO, OH (EDITORIAL) - There was a time, not all that long ago, when the Toledo city swimming pools were a significant part of a neighborhood.  But the financial realities of a fiscally strapped city forced about half of the city pools to close.

And like so many deserted things in urban areas, the empty pools and related buildings quickly fell into blight.  Now Mayor Bell's office announced plans to demolish 4 of the damaged pools.  In a city swamped by money problems and facing a dwindling tax base, restoring a swimming pool is not high on the priority list.

It is difficult to not perceive the demolition of the pools as just one more symbol of decline.  Yet, in reality, the number of people using these pools had fallen, in some cases to just a few hundred.  The empty pools became a wasteland violated by vandals and troublemakers.  So now the pools will be plowed under and the buildings razed.  It may be harsh realities driving this decision, but that doesn't make it any less sad.
