(Toledo News Now) - Food safety certification is usually a top priority for the restaurant industry. But at least one newly-opened facility is without anyone on staff who is certified at the required minimum level.
During inspections, the Lucas County Health Department checks to ensure at least one employee at all times is food safety certified. It helps eliminate the potential for bacteria and foodborne illness.
Recently opened Blackwood's Grille, located on Holland-Sylvania Road in Sylvania, is said to be clean and well-maintained, but at the request of the county, it must have employees with food safety credentials. Inspectors also observed many homestyle food containers in use, which are not approved. Only commercial-grade NSF items are to be in operation.
Just minutes away, Applebee's on Monroe Street in west Toledo is at fault for having malfunctioning coolers. If permanent repairs are not made, a public health order will be issued. It will be a requirement to make the necessary changes, according to the inspection report, because the coolers have had several temperature violations in the past. Properly controlling temperatures is critical to preventing bacteria and foodborne disease.
Additionally, Applebee's had utensils stored in standing water at room temperature, which was another repeat violation, and prep top coolers were found holding foods at improper temperatures.
Maumee has two restaurants making this week's report: Panera Bread and Magic Wok.
Panera on West Dussel Drive needs to thoroughly clean, sanitize and maintain the interior of its ice machine as mold growth is currently an issue.
Magic Wok on Conant Street will need to watch for freshness because cooked pasta, chicken and beef were still available after the seven-day discard date. All ready-to-eat foods, held longer than 24 hours, need to have the proper label. Management was also advised to contact a repair service company due to ice accumulation in a freezer.
Thinking of pizza for dinner tonight? Call Papa John's on Key Street in south Toledo. Inspectors gave great reviews and no violations.
