The City of Toledo has received its first monthly installment of taxes collected from people who win more than $2,500 at Hollywood Casino Toledo.
For the month of June, the city received a check totaling $16,000. When a player wins more than $2,500 at the casino, taxes are taken out of the winnings, with the city receiving 2.25 percent.
"It's a win-win. People are obviously happy when they win, but we get a little bit as well per state law. The casino is collecting that for us. We received about $16,000 which was part of the June take which we received recently," said Toledo Finance Director Patrick McLean.
That is in addition to the $532,000 the city has collected through taxes on casino profits. While the city does not try to collect taxes from people winning less than $2,500, McLean says he hopes people use casino winnings and spend it around the city to help circulate that money through the local economy.
