11-year-old crashes SUV into gas pump, sparks fire in west Toledo

WEST TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) – A fire has closed the Shell station at the corner of Central Avenue and Talmadge Road on the edge of west Toledo and Ottawa Hills.

A vehicle hit a gas pump at the station around 10:30 p.m. Monday, causing the fire. The station is still currently closed.

According to the Toledo Fire Department, a woman stopped to get gas on Central Avenue and left her daughter and two friends in the car as she went to get money. The woman's 11-year-old daughter climbed into the driver's seat and somehow hit the accelerator, causing the SUV to crash into the gas pump.

The fire has been put out, but the vehicle is still sitting against the pump.

Police say situations like these can be extremely dangerous.

"When you're talking about their size, you know, they can't reach the pedals. They're not familiar with the gas and the brake, controlling the vehicle with the steering wheel, the power of the motor. You know, this is all just brand new stuff to an 11-year-old," said Sgt. Tom LaForge with the Toledo Police.

Everyone involved in the accident is alright.
