SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) - This year at the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic, presented by Kroger, Owens Corning and O-I, you can check in to each hole on FourSquare using your smart phone as you follow your favorite player across the green.
Local digital agency Hanson, Inc. has partnered with the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic to create a social media presence and increase awareness of the tournament's mission. Since 1984, the Jamie Farr tournament has donated millions of dollars to local children's charities. In an effort to extend that mission to younger LPGA fans and philanthropists, this year the tournament engaged Hanson to provide full social media support.
"There's been a lot of energy around social media in the LPGA, and we're excited to continue that at the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic," said Judd Silverman, tournament director. "From the beginning, our focus has been on raising support for local children's charities, and this year's social media efforts are helping us increase that community engagement even more."
The tournament's new Facebook and Twitter accounts are great sources to get updated event information or ask a question. Hanson's social media team will continue to update these accounts during the tournament, providing live online coverage.
Hanson has also placed geolocation tags at each hole of the course at Highland Meadows Golf Club to allow FourSquare users to "check in" on their mobile phones. FourSquare is a social media platform that invites users to virtually check in to businesses and events to see tips, access special offers, and compete to become "mayor" of a location by checking in most often. FourSquare users who check in to a hole during the tournament will have the chance to become mayor of that hole.
Another way for social media enthusiasts to get involved will be a "tweet wall" at the Hollywood Casino Gala Dinner & Show Aug. 7, at the SeaGate Centre. Twitter users are invited to use the official hashtag #JamieFarr2012 to live tweet the event. These tweets will be displayed in real time on a monitor at the event.
Twitter engagement will continue at the Celebrity Pro-Am Aug. 8. A Hanson employee will serve as the tournament's first "tweeting standard-bearer," live-tweeting from his perspective on the green.
"Hanson was founded in Toledo and has a demonstrated commitment to our local community," said Steve Hanson, president and CEO of Hanson, Inc. "So we're genuinely thrilled to put our digital expertise to work in support of the tournament's mission."
The Jamie Farr Toledo Classic will be held Aug. 6-12 at Highland Meadows Golf Course in Sylvania.
