TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) – Neighbors in a west Toledo neighborhood are fed up with speeders. They said the closure of Central near Jackman is forcing drivers to take a fast and dangerous detour on their street.
Residents living on Giant Street said they understand navigating through construction can be tough, but barreling through their neighborhood looking for a quick detour could end up being deadly.
Turn onto Giant from Jackman and there is a sign stating clearly that the road is closed. However, another temporary closure of Central is forcing drivers to overlook detours and speed down the first street they see.
Danara Fryman has lived on Giant for years and said the speeding is unacceptable.
"We have a lot kids on this road, and animals, especially cats, that run back and forth. We're just afraid that somebody's going to get hit," said Fryman.
Neighbors have even taken it upon themselves to add more signage, hoping drivers will take a look. They said they cannot control the drivers, but they can pick up the phone and ask for increased police patrol.
The Ohio Department of Transportation said it will be installing bigger barricades to keep drivers out, and looking into additional signage to help keep Giant Street slow and safe.
