FREMONT, OH (Toledo News Now) - Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine joined Sandusky County Sheriff Kyle Overmyer, Ottawa County Sheriff Stephen Levorchick, and Fremont Police Chief Tim Wiersma Tuesday to announce the arrests and indictments of more than two dozen people from three northwest Ohio counties.
Police say 18 of the 34 people indicted were arrested Tuesday. The investigation that lead to the indictment lasted 5 years, and involved more than $100,000 worth of controlled drug buys.
"This should send a message to anyone who is going to sell drugs in this area. We may not get you the first time, but we're after you," said DeWine.
Police say the group brought cocaine and crack cocaine into northwest Ohio from Central and South America. Most of the people arrested Tuesday are mid level drug dealers, according to officials.
"The biggest thing we want to do is take the drugs off the street, and then get the mid level dealers and then upper level dealers if at all possible. That's what our girls are ultimately, but you've got to start somewhere and you've got to start with the little guys," said Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Levorchick.
