Body found in Maumee River identified

TOLEDO, OH (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) - The body found in the Maumee River Wednesday night has been identified as 59-year-old Robert Brennan, of Findlay.

An employee at the Grand Plaza Hotel spotted a fully-clothed man floating around 8 p.m. near the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge.

A Toledo Fire Department Water Rescue Crew responded to the scene and determined Brennan was dead.

There were no obvious signs of trauma or foul play. The Lucas County coroner determined Brennan drowned. Still, it is uncertain how or where he entered the river.

On Wednesday night, Toledo Police Sergeant Bill Wauford said, "It's a bit unusual in that his body wasn't in the water for long. The person that made the call seemed to do so shortly after."

Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy. The Lucas County Coroner's Office had it scheduled for Thursday, but have pushed it back to Friday.

"Right now we have a detective looking into his personal life to see what may have happened. We're trying to rule out any type of foul play. I think at this point, we pretty much have done that," explained Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the Toledo Police.
