Sylvania School District leaders had planned to remodel the theatre at Southview High School this year, but the project has been delayed because the district severely underestimated the cost of the job.
District leaders established a budget of $270,000 for the remodel before soliciting bids. When the bids came back, leaders discovered the project would cost more than twice that amount.
Now officials are rethinking the plan.
"We have to go back to the drawing board, and fit it into the scope of what the district can afford," said Southview Principal David McMurray.
Leaders say they will begin to purchase some upgrades one at a time, starting with new lighting.
"We're hoping to go to LED lighting. It'll help save in electricity costs, and from my understanding, LED lighting is a lot safer as well," said McMurry.
But McMurry says there is a lot that needs to be replaced in the theatre.
"It's very difficult to manage. The computer system and technology is just dated. Our hope is to get something that's up to date," said McMurry.
