TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) – Ohio's latest ACT scores are shedding light on a pressing problem for the country's high school students. Nearly three-fourths of students are not ready for college.
Last year's numbers were released Wednesday with results nearly lining up with past years.
Ohio is faring better than the country's average as a whole:
- 28 percent of Ohio students who took the ACT are considered ready for college in the core subjects.
- 25 percent of students are ready nationwide.
However, there is a big difference among the subjects:
- 71 percent of Ohio students are ready for college courses in English.
- 58 percent are ready for reading.
- 49 percent can take on a college math class.
- 34 percent are ready for science in college.
The numbers are a concern to school districts across the area.
"It's tremendously important. You think about the jobs that are out there now. Many of them weren't even in existence 10 years from now. So our students that are in school are being prepared for jobs that aren't even invented yet. The district is looking to be proactive in terms of being proactive and going after STEM programming, which is science, technology engineering and math," said Jim Gault, TPS chief academic officer.
