The rock painted as a memorial for Sziraki, before being defaced.A spirit rock that had been made into a memorial for a Southview graduate and veteran who died after returning from Afghanistan has been defaced.
The rock had been painted camouflage with a tribute to 2004 Southview graduate Cory Sziraki. Sziraki, a United States Marine, received two bronze stars for valor during tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sziraki died unexpectedly on May 14 after returning home from Afghanistan.
Wednesday, students and staff discovered the rock and been painted red and blue, with negative words about the school spray painted over the memorial. Students have since wrapped the rock in an American flag and a sign saying "Think about what you're painting over". Community members said the sign covers profane words. Toledo News Now was able to confirm the word "Knights" was also painted on the rock.
Southview's football team is set to take on the St. Francis Knights Friday at the Glass Bowl.
Sylvania Police say they have not opened an investigation into the matter.
