Although many of the farmers in Ohio and Indiana have suffered through a crop destroying drought, most of us do not pay attention to the local crop production.

We expect our grocery stores to be filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy products and they usually are. But for a lot of farmers and their families this has been a very tough year. And as is ever the case next year holds no promises. Such as the life that farm families have chosen. They do not get sick days or vacation days or paid holidays. The work of the farm is ongoing and as always there is the dependence on weather. 

In spite of the advances in technology, farmers still live with uncertainty. When the soil is ready to be worked, they plant the seeds. The farmer is guaranteed only one thing, when the alarm clock goes off in the morning, there will be plenty of work to do.

So the next time you're in a grocery store, take a moment to appreciate what it is to be surrounded by what is such abundance. It was not put there by magic but by someone magical; the American farmer.
