TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Toledo Public Schools has expanded a pilot program to offer a free breakfast to all students in the K-8 schools before classes start for the day.
"What we ask the schools to do is have the students go through the cafeteria line, and those who want breakfast can have it, the choice is up to them," said TPS Business Manager Jim Gant.
Speaking with some parents at Beverly School who have seen the new program in action, they're pleased.
"My son gets up and is excited to go to school," said Christie King.
"Surprisingly things were well organized, there was no chaos. My only drawback is the district didn't provide the parents with a lot of information before school started," said Debbie Collins.
Gant says logistical challenges are being addressed on a school-by-school basis, such as separating younger students from the older students.
Gant says the goal is to improve student achievement because if a child is not hungry to start the day they have a better chance to focus on education.
