PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) - A Perrysburg school levy approved four years ago by voters is set to expire. The school district is asking voters to approve the levy renewal.
Melissa Miller has been a Perrysburg resident for 11 years. Miller has two children enrolled in Perrysburg schools and she knows what her vote will be come November 6.
"I will definitely vote for the levy, I think its important, I would rather not pay more taxes but I do feel that its an important levy," said Miller.
The board of education is asking for a 13.1 mill incremental levy which is roughly a 3 mill increase from the previous levy. Superintendent Tom Hosler explained what this financially means for voters.
"That will be, for a $200,000 home, it will be about a $17 increase a month from what they're paying today," said Hosler.
The levy will go up 3 mills in the first year and an additional 1 mill for the next three years.
"One of the great features about an incremental levy is, more people move into the community, as the value of the community rises, the amount that you could pay decreases," said Hosler.
Should the levy be approved, the money will go towards updating technology, buying new textbooks and hiring more teachers. Hosler feels this is needed for the expanding classrooms.
"When the levy was first passed in 2008 to where we are today, we've picked up 288 students. So, to put it into perspective that's half of an elementary building. So we've added, in four years half of an elementary building," Hosler.
Hosler said , should the levy fail, the school system will lose 20% of their funding. As the city grows so will the class sizes.
"We don't want to scare people, we want people to know what's at stake, but we also want them to know what they're voting for. The event that the community says 'no', they have to understand that these are the things that we have to do to keep operating," Hosler.
Superintendent Hosler and the rest of the Perrysburg staff will send out a letter to residents giving reasons why they should support the levy in November.
