PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) - For the past decade Perrysburg Police have been offering citizens the chance to see what it is like to be a police officer.
The Citizens Police Academy starts Wednesday. This is a free eight week course for Perrysburg residents that runs every Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. -9:30 p.m.
It includes classroom work that shows the inner workings and the organizational structure of the police system. They'll also go on ride alongs, take a shot at the firing range and go through role play with the officers.
"We put them in decision making situations where they might , using rubber guns not real guns, but have to make decisions about when they would draw their weapon to defend themselves and defend someone else based on the laws that officers have to learn and the laws that officers have to abide by, so it gives them a look from the perspective of a police officer having to do their jobs every day," said Chief Dan Paez of the Perrysburg Police.
Classes have pretty much filled up but in the past they have taken in some last minute walk ins. If interested in joining Wednesday night, call the Perrysburg Police Department at 419-872-8001.
