LAWRENCEBURG, IN (FOX19) -

An Indiana casino is letting 160 workers go.

The Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg, Indiana said in a statement on Wednesday that the layoffs were because of reduced consumer spending and the expansion of gaming in Ohio. The casino admitted the new casinos in Ohio has affected business.

"It's a shame in the sense that it's going to reduce income for Dearborn County," added Andy Mahlman, a Lawrenceburg resident.

Over the past two years, attendance has gone down 12 percent and revenue has gone down more than 8 percent.

Those affected by the staff reductions will receive first consideration in applying for any new positions that become available in Lawrenceburg or elsewhere at Penn National Gaming casinos.

"A lot of them are so committed to having good families and good values and, now, all that is taken away from them", said Amanda Gibson who is a Stylist at Wendy's Hair & Nails on Walnut Street. "A lot of them are couples that have kids and they don't know where they're gonna go from this point and a lot of places aren't hiring right now. It's scary times."

The casino still employs 1,400 people.

The Horseshoe Casino in Cincinnati is scheduled to open next Spring.
