TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The highway patrol is still investigating the fatal accident on Airport Highway Tuesday night. It appears both alcohol and drugs played a role in the crash.
Tuesday night at 10:30 p.m., 42 year old Stephanie Nash of Delta was struck and killed by a car driven by David Walter on Airport Highway. Walter then drove less than half a mile to the Toledo post of the highway patrol to report the accident.
"Initially he said he was scared and he that this was probably the fastest way of getting help you know because by the time he picks up the phone and dials it, he's already in our parking lot let alone waiting for someone to answer the phone or dispatch it out," said Lt. William Bowers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
OHP took a voluntary blood and urine sample from Walter to determine if drugs or alcohol were in his system. OHP already believed that is the case with Nash after interviewing her husband.
"We believe the subject that was killed was actually drinking that evening. We know that the husband was drinking that evening. What their level of intoxication was is unknown at this time. Obviously we won't know that for a couple weeks yet," said Lt. Bowers.
Lt. Bowers says Nash's husband told law enforcement his wife was walking home and he was trying to locate her. OHP does not know where Nash was positioned in the road at the time of the accident.
"We know the vehicle didn't leave its lane or we don't believe the vehicle left its lane when he struck her so that would indicate that she was actually in the, it'd be the far left lane of Eastbound St. Rt. 2 when she was struck," said Lt. Bowers.
The highway patrol will present their evidence to the prosecutor to determine if any charges will be filed in this case. OHP is asking if anyone witnessed the accident to call the Toledo post to assist in the investigation.
