‘Old’ Route US 24 getting a new name

Posted: Updated:

WATERVILLE, OH (Toledo News Now) - With the new US Route 24 finally open, the old US Route 24 needed to be renamed.

Lucas County commissioners met to talk about a new name for the old route and to get the public's input.

The Ohio Department of Transportation took over responsibility and maintenance on the new road.  The department is transferring the old route over to the counties and cities it runs through.

Lucas County officials say they already have a name recommendation in place. The existing Anthony Wayne Trail will keep the name and will be extended and stretch all the way to Dutch Rd.

The portions from Waterville to 295 and 295 to the county line will be called South River Road.

"This is a result of research by our tax department, conversations with the EMS, post office and also public response," said Jeff Lohse, Lucas County Engineering.

A new road name comes with new addresses and that has some who live on the road upset. A few dozen people have signed petitions against the name change.

County officials say they will keep the petitions on record but for now they are keeping the recommendation.
