TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The Port Authority's Board of Directors voted Tuesday to move forward with negotiations for a new flight to be added to the Toledo Express Airport.
The flight would be seasonal available in the winter. The flight would go to and from Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers.
The President and CEO of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority Paul Toth said the price will be competitive to what is offered at Detroit Metro Airport.
"The airline industry has had its challenges, and Toledo Express, because of being in the shadow of Detroit Metro, has been the brunt of those challenges. But we're going to continue to move forward and try opportunities, and we're actually stepping up and taking a risk on this," said Toth.
Port Authority staff is entering negotiations with a broker for aviation services. The staff will decide the final terms of the agreement.
"It's really exciting. My brother is planning on moving to Florida possibly, so definitely would get a chance to get him back and go see him," said Sarah Smith who is excited about the potential new air service.
"I think it's a fantastic idea. I have several friends who have places down there, who I love going down to visit, and it's nice to have something going on in Toledo," said Peter Taylor.
If everything goes smoothly, the proposed service could start as soon as December 20.
