SANDUSKY, OH (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) - Cedar Point crews used explosives to remove the Space Spiral ride Wednesday morning, an attraction at the park since 1965.
At 7:30 a.m., approximately 10 pounds of explosives triggered the 330-foot tower to fall. Workers calculated precisely where the tower would land and dug a large hole into the fall zone to cushion the impact of the cabin area.
Cedar Point will pay tribute to the Space Spiral by including a portion of it in the Cedar Point Ride Graveyard during HalloWeekends this fall, where it will join past attractions that include the Rotor, Pirate Ride, Earthquake and Frontier Lift.
The Space Spiral was removed to pave the way for the park's first winged coaster, called GateKeeper. It's scheduled to open in May of 2013.
