TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - After accidentally throwing away a kidney that was about to be used in a transplant surgery, a University of Toledo Medical Center nurse has resigned.
Officials at UTMC say Judith Moore, a part-time employee, is no longer working for them. Moore resigned on Monday after being suspended with pay.
A donated kidney was accidentally thrown away with other medical waste back in August. It happened before the procedure on the recipient even started.
An investigation is still under way and the university has hired a consultant to compose a report on how this could have happened. Officials are unsure when that report will be complete.
In the meantime, the living kidney donation program at UTMC is suspended, while officials wait for the report and re-examine policies and procedures.
More than 970 people are now waiting to undergo living kidney transplants.
