TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - A new pilot program is being launched in the Old Orchard neighborhood aimed at giving police some extra eyes to help solve crimes through the use of technology.
The ‘Eye Citizen' program offers free text alerts and e-mails to people wanting to sign up for the free service when police are dispatched for crimes in their area.
"As our police department continues to be strained trying to handle the amount of crime an extra pair of eyes in my opinion should be helpful to let the police solve the problem," said Councilman Tom Waniewski.
Neighbors in Old Orchard applaud the new program aimed at better informing people about what is happening in their neighborhood.
"It would be helpful. I would definitely be on the look-out if I could help," said Beth Lepkowski.
"Anything you can do to catch the bad guys it's a good idea," said Dan Lepkowski.
Waniewski said his goal is to eventually extend the service to the entire District 5, and then citywide if city leaders decide to do it.
