NEW ORLEANS (RNN) – A New Orleans assistant city attorney must've not done a good job of checking his pockets before heading to court.
According to media reports, a marijuana joint fell out of prosecutor Jason Cantrell's pocket onto the courtroom floor in front of police officers in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court.
People who witnessed the scene said the two officers glanced at the joint, and then exchanged a baffled look before making one of the, what many would call, world's easiest drug busts.
The officers reportedly laughed as they escorted Cantrell, 43, out of the courtroom and wrote him a summons for simple possession of marijuana.
Cantrell's wife, LaToya, is currently a candidate for New Orleans City Council.
On her Facebook page, LaToya wrote that she "absolutely" did not condone her husband's actions, and was "angry, embarrassed and disappointed."
"I absolutely do not condone his actions," she said. "He will accept the legal consequences as the judicial process takes its course."
Despite only being cited and let go under low-level marijuana policy, LaToya said her husband has submitted his resignation.
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said the prosecutor was suspended without pay as the investigation continues.
Cantrell had worked as an attorney for 17 years, including six years as a public defender in juvenile court.
His wife said she plans to remain in the race for city council.
