MONROE TOWNSHIP, MI (Toledo News Now) - The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred on South Dixie Highway just south of Mortar Creek Road in Monroe Township, MI.
Preliminary investigation reveals that Kelly S. Lynch, 33, of Lasalle, MI, had operated a red GMC pickup truck southbound on South Dixie Highway when the vehicle ran out of gas. Lynch was able to pull off the roadway onto the west shoulder. Once parked, a front seat passenger, Orlando Porter, 49, also of Lasalle, MI, exited the vehicle to retrieve a gas can from the bed of the pickup truck. Porter then walked to the driver-side door to speak with Lynch when both he and the pickup were struck by a Chevrolet pickup truck traveling southbound on South Dixie Highway. The Chevrolet was being operated by Matthew J. Brooks, 59, of Erie, MI.
Porter was transported to a local hospital in Monroe where he later died from injuries suffered in the crash.
Brooks was also transported to a hospital where he was treated and released.
A 5-year-old rear seat passenger in the GMC pickup was not injured in the crash. Lynch was also uninjured.
The crash remains under investigation. It is believed that another vehicle may have been traveling in close proximity to Brook's vehicle at the time of the crash and may have witnessed the crash.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call 734-240-7551.
