SLYVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) - A year old unsolved murder in Sylvania Township has been cracked. Police say their suspect is in custody at the Lucas county jail.
The Sylvania Township Police Department has charged 48 year old Melody Williams with one count each of aggravated murder and aggravated robbery.
The crime happened in the early morning hours of July 4, 2011. Firefighters responded to a house fire in the 51 hundred block of Inland Dr. Inside they found the body of resident L.C. Lyons Junior.
Gary and Nancy Raney live across the street from the murder scene.
"I'm glad to see somebody brought to justice for it," said Gary.
Police suspect Lyons and Williams knew each other and robbery is believed to be the motive. The investigation revealed Lyons was shot in the head.
The state fire marshal's office ruled the blaze arson set to cover up the murder.
"He was very quiet. Wave at each other once in a while. That's about it. Leave town in the morning. Come back in the evening. Didn't bother anybody. Very quiet," said Gary.
The Lyons house remains vacant and plywood covers broken windows. The Raneys said they are relieved by the arrest because they have seen shady characters visiting the house.
"Yes. Yes. that's good to know because we keep watching people coming near the house. Called the police a couple of times. Strange cars things like that," said Nancy.
If convicted Melody Williams faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
