Lucas County charter schools run the gamut on state report card; 5 Excellent, 8 Academic Emergency

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Charter schools in Lucas County rated everywhere on the scale except for Excellent with Distinction on this year's state report card.

Five eared grades of "Excellent", 7 were rated "Effective", 5 showed "Continuous Improvement", 7 are in "Academic Watch" and 8 were placed in "Academic Emergency".  Two Lucas County charter schools were not rated on the report card.

Among those rated as Excellent was the Toledo School for the Arts.  This was the seventh year the school earned that rating. Leaders at the school say talented teaching staff and students help them earn high marks on state tests.

"We have extremely high expectations for our students, whether it's in the artistic studio or in the academic classroom. You hear that schools are teaching to the middle. We think every student can be above the middle, and we work very, very hard to push and make that happen," said Marty Porter, Director of the school.
