FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) – Findlay middle schoolers were evacuated from their school after a gas leak, but what happened next is why some parents are frustrated with district officials.

"We were scared to death. We had no idea where she was," said Jennifer Roush.

Roush is a mom to a sixth-grader. She was hysterical Friday when she could not find her daughter after school. A gas leak forced all the students out of the building around noon, but Roush said she had no idea.

"We didn't get any notification whatsoever," she said.

The school superintendent says they let everyone know, including parents on the distribution list, The Courier newspaper, and WFIN radio station.

Roush's daughter called her from a stranger's phone to tell her where she was.

All the students walked slightly more than a mile with teachers to the University of Findlay.

"As a parent, there is no reason for us to not know where our children are," said Roush.

A bus returned students to the school where they were let back inside the building at 4 p.m. to pick up their belongings. According to the superintendent, emergency vehicles were present and seven or eight students were taken to the hospital to be treated by nurses.

"It's disappointing. It's frustrating. We trust our daughter with the school staff and to not know where she is for two hours is pretty frightening, said Roush.

Roush is signed up for the e-mail alerts, but says she does not check personal e-mail while she is at work.
