A University Hospitals doctor has been indicted on 24 charges including one count of kidnapping, two counts of rape, eleven counts of gross sexual imposition and ten counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor, Aurora Police said.
On Wednesday, November 28, 2012, officers and U.S. Postal inspectors searched Dr. Mark Shaffer, Jr.'s Windward Drive home in Aurora and his Bainbridge Township medical office. The search warrants were the result of an on-going investigation by postal authorities into alleged distribution of child pornography.
While searching the 79-year old's home authorities found several video recordings of suspected child pornography.
Later that day, Dr. Shaffer voluntarily went to the Aurora police station for a follow-up interview. During the interview, Shaffer told investigators that he has engaged in sexual activity with children for several years.
Dr. Shaffer was charged with one count of gross sexual imposition of a victim less than thirteen and taken to the Portage County Justice Center. He was arraigned the following day and bond was set at $1,000,000.
Since one of the victims identified by Dr. Shaffer lives in Kent, detectives from the Kent Police Department were notified. After the victim was interviewed, an addition charge of rape of a child under the age of thirteen was filed on December 4 against Shaffer.
Dr. Shaffer was suspended from UH on November 29 and then fired from the hospital on December 10, 2012.
