Details are emerging about a west Toledo development project for the former Showcase Cinemas property on Secor Road just south of Interstate 475.
Steve Roumaya with Key Hotel and Property Management says construction of a five-story Hampton Inn and Suites could begin in March on Secor. Additionally, a Holiday Inn Express is expected to be built in 2014, along with mixed retail.
It was once "the place" to go to catch a movie in the Glass City, but now the former Showcase Cinemas property sits empty. Councilman Tom Waniewski is excited to hear the property owner is planning to build two new hotels on the site.
"My reaction is very good and very positive. I hope the investor can continue with his plans as he appears to be doing, but it's calling for a 120-room hotel, a 100-room hotel, two different hotels," said Waniewski.
Key Hotel and Property Management is targeting both hotels to be built there, along with hopes for new retail development.
"This is exciting news because that parcel is a huge parcel, has been empty a long time. It's an eyesore. Obviously, the Westgate area still has a lot of life in it," said Councilman George Sarantou.
To assist the redevelopment, Sarantou and Waniewski are pushing for $350,000 to be included in this year's Capital Improvements Budget to extend Executive Parkway east of Secor, providing an intersection with a traffic light for that property.
"I think we should take a good look at that because you got a developer with a successful track record in Toledo and Lucas County, and secondly, these are projects that could do well in that area," explained Sarantou.
"The city was apprehensive, wanted to make sure if we're going to spend $350,000, the road is not a road to nowhere, that it results in a return for the taxpayers," said Waniewski.
Council will discuss its 2013 Capital Improvements plan during a committee hearing Thursday.
