DOJ: Toledo man had 18 firearms, body armor, more than 40,000 rounds of ammunition

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Department of Justice indictment unsealed Wednesday alleges Toledo resident Richard Schmidt illegally possessed 18 firearms, including several assault weapons, body armor and more than 40,000 rounds of ammunition.  Schmidt is also accused of trafficked in counterfeit goods.

Schmidt, 47, was arrested after several local law enforcement agencies, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security, searched his home and business on December 21, 2012. Schmidt operates the Spindletop Sports Zone located at 1234 N. Main St. in Bowling Green.

According to the Department of Justice, Schmidt was convicted of manslaughter in 1990 in the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas. As a convicted felon, Schmidt was not allowed to own firearms.

The indictment alleges Schmidt illegally possessed:

  • 2 Ruger P95 9 mm pistols
  • 1 Sig Sauer P250 9 mm pistol
  • 1 Taurus PT145 pistol
  • 1 Stag Arms AR-15 rifle
  • 1 Armalite AR-10 rifle
  • 1 Mossberg 500 12-gauge shotgun
  • 1 Remington 870 Express 12-gauge shotgun
  • 1 Winchester M94 30/30 rifle
  • 1 Winchester M190 .22-caliber rifle
  • 1 Remington M700 rifle
  • 1 Mossberg M535 12-gauge shotgun
  • 1 Russian American Armory SAIGA 12-gauge shotgun
  • 1 Federal Arms Corporation FA 91 .308-caliber rifle
  • 1 Eagle Arms 5.56-caliber rifle
  • 1 Rock River Arms AR-15 rifle
  • 1 Ruger Mark II pistol
  • 1 Sturm-Ruger .375 magnum pistol
  • Body armor
  • Approximately 40,488 rounds of ammunition

The Department of Justice also says Schmidt trafficked in counterfeit goods, specifically goods with counterfeit logos and brand-name markings of the National Football League, Nike, Reebok and Louis Vuitton. Investigators recovered seven high-capacity magazines during the search, according to court records.

"It is deeply troubling that law enforcement found this man, with a prior homicide conviction, in possession of an arsenal," Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio said in a statement. "We owe the FBI and our other law enforcement partners our thanks that they caught this man, with 18 firearms -- some of them assault weapons – high-capacity magazines, more than 40,000 rounds of ammunition, and a bulletproof vest stored in a locked room in a mall, before anyone was hurt."
