Applications piling up for Fremont Fire

Posted: Updated:

FREMONT, OH (WTOL) - The Fremont Fire Department is facing a good problem...an unexpectedly large number of applicants.

For the first time in more than 20 years, the department has had more than 90 people submit applications for firefighter positions.

"It's very surprising. I'm excited about it," said Chief Dave Foos.

Foos added, "Obviously the larger the pool of applicants we have, the higher the chance of a larger group of qualified individuals. Part of my job is to make sure we get the most value for the dollar from our employees for the safety of the citizens of Fremont."

Fire officials say they're not sure why they're seeing so much interest this year, but it could be due to neighboring communities facing layoffs in their safety forces and the poor economy, leading more people to search for work.

There are only three opening for new firefighters.

Thursday morning at city hall, the Civil Service Commission decided they'll have everyone who applied take part in the physical portion of the test at the same time, starting at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

"We're going to split them into four groups. Once they complete the physical portion of the test, they'll get about a 20 minute break, and then they'll move right into the written portion." said Chief Foos.

The written portion of the test is timed, and it takes about three hours to complete. It includes a test of integrity.

"It's going to be a long day," said Chief Foos.

Anyone interested in applying has until Friday to submit an application.
