TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) – The City of Toledo is planning to expand bike trails within the city.

A proposal was introduced to city council Tuesday, calling for the city to accept $41,000 from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) to expand trails currently along Summit Street and Front Street, underneath the Veterans' Glass City Skyway.

The expansion would connect the bike path along Summit Street to Jamie Farr Park, and would connect the path along Front Street to the marina. The goal will be to promote biking for recreational and transportation purposes.

The proposal also calls for the city to contribute $14,000 to the project. If it is approved, the work will occur this year.

"We've got a great project to extend the work that was begun by ODOT when they reconfigured the lift bridge," said Dave Dysard, of Toledo Engineering Services.

The project would also involve fixing an old observation area along Summit Street for bikers to stop and take in the view.
