SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Police are advising Ashfield residents to be cautious of chimney-cleaning services.

According to Ashfield Police, there have been several occurrences of residents being scammed in and around Ashfield.

One resident claims, their chimney was backing up smoke in the house not long after their chimney had been cleaned for $79. After contacting the contractor, who claimed to be licensed and insured, the resident was told they had a defective chimney liner. The contractor offered to "repair" it for $1,900, then said he would fix it for $1,400 if the resident paid in cash. The resident paid for the "repair", but the problems continued.

After searching the company on line, the resident found similar reports on the same contractor.

These alleged companies involved include, Supreme Maintenance, All Care Chimney, World Class Chimney and Empire Chimneys.

The Ashfield Police Department advises if you are contacted from any of the above services, that you decline. Residents who do decide to use a chimney contractor, to request their contractor registration number, insurance company, phone number and policy number.
