SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A multi-car crash on Saturday afternoon sent nine people to the hospital, including a pedestrian who was hit by flying debris at the scene.

The accident occurred at 187 Boston Rd. at about 2 p.m.

Dennis Leger, aide to Fire Commissioner Joseph Conant, told CBS 3 that the Jaws of Life were needed to extricate two people from one of the vehicles.

They were taken to the hospital, along with five people from another car and one from a third.

Leger said the pedestrian was struck by an alternator that flew out of one of the cars.

While nine people were hospitalized, the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
