The "five second rule" has probably been applied a time or two in your house or kitchen, but you probably don't want food served at a restaurant to hit the floor before your plate for any amount of time.
Mold, bacteria and dust mites have a real possibility of making their way onto your food when it is being stored directly on the floor, as opposed to kitchen shelves and coolers. That's what inspectors found at Sundown Cantina on Mayberry Square in Sylvania, just one of 10 violations on its report. Food held at an unsafe temperature can also lead to disaster. There's even more of a health risk when raw shell eggs are placed above bacon, opening the door to cross contamination. Inspectors also found beans being stored at unsafe temperatures,and knobs missing on grills.
Owners at Tim and Ed's Bar and Grill on Bush Street in north Toledo are still trying to fix issues inspectors found during its inspection last year. The eight violations include damaged gaskets, buildup in the bathrooms plus layers of food, debris, and grease.
Another case of food being stored on the floor was found at Happy's Pizza on South Reynolds Road in south Toledo. Upon arrival, inspectors were unable to find plastic gloves used to prepare food. More of the five violations found included date labels missing on cooked ribs in the kitchen.
However, two other pizza places are reporting perfect scores this week. Vito's on Heatherdowns Boulevard in south Toledo is free from violations, as well as Pizza Hut on Glendale Avenue.
A facility wanting to sell hot dogs and pizza is at fault with the county health department because it does not have the proper license. El Dorado on West Sylvania Avenue in west Toledo will need to upgrade its current license before the sale of hot dogs and pizzas can take place.
