U.S.
Rep. Marcy Kaptur has contacted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
to examine whether or not sludge materials taken from Toledo's wastewater
treatment plant to the Port Authority's confined disposal facility (Facility 3) in Oregon is
contributing to water quality problems in Lake Erie.
At Facility 3, sludge is mixed with dredging materials, and the facility is surrounded by lake water.
Over
recent years Toledo City Councilman Mike Collins has been raising concerns,
considering the problems with algae blooms in the lake.
Even
though city and port officials say testing has already occurred, Collins is
hoping the Kaptur letter to the federal EPA will lead to comprehensive testing
of the situation.
"What's,
to me, most important is the study that must be done in order to determine
whether or not there's any leaching of pathogens," Collins said. "And
phosphorus is a secondary issue."
Kaptur's
letter seeks technical assistance and guidance from the federal agency on the
matter.
