A former bar near the University of Toledo (UT) campus is being targeted for a future off-campus student housing complex.
The former Omni bar, located along Bancroft Street, had its share of problems, and neighbor Jim Harris is glad the bar went out of business.
"They'd keep you up until 3-3:30 in the morning," Harris said. "The police would be out here, a lot of busted bottles out here, different things of that nature."
District 5 Councilman Tom Waniewski said he and others have been speaking with a company that's targeting the property.
"I would get complaints out there," Waniewski said. "So when I hear of a developer who wants to put in some housing and dress up that area, of course I'm very interested."
WTOL has learned the interested company is called Polaris Real Estate Equities, with student housing developments at Cleveland State University, the University of Kentucky, and Indiana University.
The company president said it's too early to comment on the situation. Waniewski said this has the potential to be another ‘cornerstone' project at UT.
"When they developed the gateway at Secor and Dorr, that's one bookend," he said. "I think this could be a good viable other side of campus."
As of now, no plans have been submitted to city officials for approval.
