UTMC conducts first living donor kidney transplant since mishap

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The University of Toledo Medical Center announced Monday that it had conducted its first living donor kidney transplant since the program was suspended due to a botched operation in August of last year.

Officials say the transplant was performed Thursday. The hospital is not releasing the names or conditions of those involved.

The university chose to suspend its living donor program after a kidney was accidentally thrown away during an operation on August 10, 2012.  One nurse was fired and another resigned because of the incident.

An investigation by the Ohio Department of Health concluded poor oversight and communications, as well as insufficient policies, were factors in the incident.

In December the hospital announced it had made changes to policies and procedures, and would restart the program.
