On Tuesday, Toledo City Council approved both the 2013 operating and capital improvement budgets.
Changes to the $244 million general fund budget include hiring a police class of 50 recruits instead of 45. Old West End resident Dennis Lange applauds the move.
"I pay taxes for safety. That's my number one issue is safety, police and fire. That's what I want to pay for taxes towards and I want my money's worth. That to me is my money's worth by having a new police class, by having updated vehicles," said Lange.
The $70.9 million CIP budget includes $680,000 for new police vehicles, and Lange says he has noticed an increased patrol presence lately.
"I think it is a higher awareness of police in the area and coming through more often," said Lange.
The controversy surrounding the closing of the Northwest District Police Station on Sylvania Avenue is gaining new momentum. Even though the mayor says it will remain closed, City Council set aside $100,000 in hopes of reopening the station in the future, which something John Bibish and others living in west Toledo have wanted for some time.
"If we have officers that are going to be patrolling beats in our district - District 5 and District 6 - it stands to reason having them located here will be more efficient and effective than having them report out of the Safety Building," said Bibish.
The capital improvements budget includes $32 million for street repairs, with $9 million earmarked for residential street repairs. Council also approved $75,000 for engineering services associated with the Nautical Village project in Point Place.
