TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Toledo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jerome Pecko announced Wednesday that he will retire at the end of his current term - July 31.

With Dr. Pecko's 3-year contract nearing its completion, the school board met in an executive session Wednesday to review Pecko and determine whether or not to extend his contract.

Levies led by Pecko during his current contract failed, and student test scores dropped slightly over the last year, but some school board members support Pecko.

Board member Bob Vasquez said he was hoping Pecko would remain with the schools, and that people needed to consider the voter's reluctance to approve new taxes, as well as the poor economy.

"I'm looking for consistent leadership," Vasquez said.

Pecko submitted a letter of resignation of his own accord.

"After careful consideration, I wish to inform you that I will not accept renewal of my contract with the Toledo Public Schools when it ends on July 31, 2013," Pecko said in his letter. "I remain committed to working diligently for the balance of my term."

No word yet on whether or not the board had reached a decision to offer Pecko a contract renewal or not.
