WTOL Vice President and General Manager Bob Chirdon
(Toledo News Now) -
This
Saturday Fort Meigs will commemorate its 200th anniversary.
The
strategic significance of Fort Meigs in the War of 1812 is an under-appreciated
moment in the history of our country:
Under
incredibly dire conditions, and with the fate of the Northwest Territory hanging
in the balance, a small band of soldiers constructed the wooden-walled fort. Fort
Meigs stood at the center of military operations and helped prevent the
collapse and loss of this entire region to the combined British and Indian
combatants.
If
you visit Fort Meigs this Saturday from 1-4 p.m., you will be treated to
re-enactors demonstrating the rigors of life in a wild territory. It was a
dangerous place. Life was filled with hardships, sickness and death were
constant realities, yet the soldiers and others persevered.
If
you can get your kids to leave the comforts of home and the virtual world of
computer games for a few hours, a trip to Fort Meigs might help them appreciate
that life wasn't always so easy.
