PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Perrysburg city council
debated whether or not to endorse a subsidized senior housing project at their meeting
Tuesday.
The endorsement passed
with a 4-3 vote. This means the property owners of Harbor Town Place have the
city's support to ask the federal government for subsidized money to help fund
their project.
The housing complex would
be for residents ages 55 and up, and would contain 69 independent-living units.
It is expected to cost $16-17 million.
Those for the project say
it will bring jobs and affordable senior housing to the city. Those against it
say it is not needed in Perrysburg.
"I was very frustrated to
vote," Council Member Todd Grayson said. "Our government is broke, we're $17
trillion in debt, and now we're going to be taking $1,200-a-month apartments
and renting them out for 600 bucks. Where's that $600 per month coming from for
69 units? Federal taxpayers – us."
Federal funding has not
been secured for the project. The council's vote only provides a recommendation
for the property owners to ask for the funding.
