BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -
A
local support center for victims of domestic violence is hosting a fundraiser
Saturday.
Alicia's
Voice is a non-profit organization started by Kathy Newlove after her own
daughter was killed in an act of domestic violence. Just last week, Alicia's
Voice was planning to close its doors at the end of February due to a lack of
funding and donations. They were also planning to cancel an event, "My Big Fat
Tacky Wedding Reception," because of lack of attendance.
But
Newlove said they've received an outpouring of support from the community since
then, so the event is still on. She said she doesn't know if there will be
enough money to keep headquarters open for long, but they now have enough funds
to help about 30 women go to school and get back on their feet.
"I
did not know how many people out there were aware of Alicia's Voice and what we
do," Newlove said. "But we will completely turn a victim into a survivor, and
that's what our purpose is."
The
fundraiser will be held at the Bowling Green City Park, in the Veterans'
Building, starting at 7 p.m. this Saturday. It will be catered by Tony Packo's,
and music supplied by 56DAYZ.
