Grief counseling begins after Springfield middle school drowning

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

On Friday afternoon, a 12-year-old boy at Kiley Middle School drowned during swimming class.

The incident remains under investigation and Springfield Public Schools said it will launch its own full scale investigation to determine what led to the loss of life.

On Saturday, a small vigil was set up in front of the school.

In a press release, the school district said more than 50 faculty and staff, as well as a small group of students and parents, were at the building Saturday to take advantage of grief counseling.

On top of that, a member of the district's guidance department was on the phone in the afternoon speaking with some students who were classmates of boy who died.

Superintendent Daniel Warwick said counselors will be on hand when the school reopens on Monday, Feb. 25.

Students are off this coming week for February break.
