Genoa releases 2013 budget

GENOA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Village of Genoa released its 2013 budget Tuesday for village council review.

Total operations expenses were budgeted for $8.6 million, with $1.4 million of those funds going towards the daily operations of Genoa.

By law, the budget must be approved by March 31.

"We start working on the budget in September, get wish lists from the people, then put the numbers down and see if there are any problems to be had," said Charles Brinkman, Financial Officer of Genoa.

Brinkman says the village tries to look ahead by budgeting money for any major expenses that could come up during the year.

Two projects leaders included in the budget are Phase 2 of the Washington Street reconstruction project and continued work on the Northwest Storm Sewer Project.

According to Brinkman, a 1.5 percent pay increase for village employees has also been budgeted.

"If the money is there, it would be nice. We budgeted for that, but it has to go before council," said Brinkman.

Brinkman added, the pay increase would benefit full-time village employees if approved. Whether or not part-time employees and Parks & Recreation workers would also see raises is uncertain at this time.

Council would likely decide on the pay increase this summer.

Brinkman said financially, he doesn't see anything of great concern in Genoa's 2013 budget compared to 2012.

"We've had a couple of rough years just like everybody else," said Brinkman, "but I'm not expecting any surprises this year – either on the expense side or the income side."

Once council approves the 2013 budget, a public hearing will take place on March 4. A final reading will follow on March 18.
